Some New Commandments
I’m no prophet, and last time I went hillwalking, no-one gave me any tablets (except ibuprofen, for a sore knee), but it strikes me that it’s time for some new rules to live by.
Or rather, time to express some moral and ethical codes which will suit and shape the way we live today.
How about these, for starters:
- Consider other people. Think about the effect your actions have on others. Be considerate.
- Be generous with your time, your attention and your resources. Help, wherever and wherever you can, even before asked.
- Take responsibility for your actions and words. Own them. Own up to them. Stand by them. Apologise for them and make amends if you can’t.
- Be courteous and kind. Show respect and gratitude and praise where it’s due. And even where it isn’t.
- Take the high road. Don’t be dragged into negative reactions or behaviours until they’re warranted (and then, only for really good reasons). Expect good things from people. Give the benefit of the doubt. Listen. Try to understand. Don’t just react blindly.
I reckon if you stuck to these, if everyone stuck to these, we’d be in a better place.
I’m thinking of more. There must be more.

Adorn your outdoor space with bunting.
Wash down your garden furniture with a dilute bleach mixture.
Update any outmoded upholsteries.
Erect a tasteful willow garland above your barbecue pit.
If more people stuck to these simple alfresco rules, all fighting would cease. Cordially yours, Mrs P

This is quite similar to my on internal new years resolutions – which were more selfishly driven, in that behind all the good intentions, I want the positive karma back on me from that I intend to give out.
