As Pete discovered, it looks like an exploitation of WP via a plugin or theme, though it’s possible that it might be possible to take advantage of something else within the php/wp interface.

In any case, your best defence is to
– check for any new users on the site. I had one and I haven’t the foggiest where “she” sprung from
– modify the permissions of the template files to 444 or similar so they can’t be written to
– remove plugins you’re not using or not sure about
– update your WP install
– change passwords for WP and ftp (and database, if you want to be belt-and-braces about the whole thing).

None of this is any guarantee that it won’t happen again, mind.

I have a terrible suspicion I know what one of the next waves of spam is going to be, but I refuse to mention it anywhere in case one of the fucktards sees it.
