Cartophilia

A few days ago, people started posting links to this flash map game, and it seems to have spread like wildfire.

It’s good, but it’s not the best one out there, because you don’t know how wrong you are when you can’t find Gabon and so on. It just moves along to the next question.

For those who want to challenge themselves (and learn) through map games, try the following:

GeoSense was doing the rounds a month ago or so. You can choose world map/europe/US and countries/cities/states which makes it a bit more challenging - plus you can play against another (anonymous) player. The thing I like about this is that it tells you how far away your guess was from the right answer, and that difference (plus time taken to guess) is used to calculate your score.

Also, earlier in the summer this advergame thing challenged users to place country outlines on a map of Europe, again with points for accuracy of placement. My high score was 37,400. My geography teacher would be so proud.

On a similar note, there are loads of geographically-inspired games and quizzes at Sheppard Software, including this one which revealed to me that Nebraska was somewhere entirely different from where I’m sure I left it.
