I’ve got a bit of a picture problem at the moment. I want to be able to display (big) photos I’ve taken, but I also want to change the selection frequently. At the moment, cost (and storage space for the “archives”) renders this impractical, but it’s something I’m open to ideas about…

You used to say that your site looked best if the reader came round to your place and looked at it on your computer. Perhaps you should apply the same philosophy to photographs and just print them and stick them on a corkboard in your kitchen? Then any passing reader could call in and look at them. :)
Why does the archive have to be full size, could always then have more modest archive images linking to full images in Flickr accounts (dedicated free one?)/ free webspace. Just need a random name generator for multi -account details (someone bring out an auto create account program). How big is big? Big enough to wear out your new macmouse scrolling around?
So, I’m presuming you mean “display physically”. So: big displays cost lots. Projectors aren’t so hot in daylight. Physical prints are big.
These, as you say, are issues.
I did have a crazy idea involving screenprinting pictures onto some form of canvas, in a long line, and then putting two rollers at either end, and some basic micro-controller with some motors. So what you have is a big billboard much like in train stations, that physically scrolls between images once every hour or so. 3-4 pictures would make a decent sized reel that didn’t stick out from the wall too much.
Of course, I’m not sure what the colour repro would be like, and the printing could cost as much as a huge flatpanel. Etc, etc, etc. But it was an idea…
Sorry - I wasn’t clear, GazH.
I meant that I had been thinking about making regular big(ish) prints of images I’ve taken and like and want to display, and then rotating them fairly frequently through a physical display on a wall. The problems come with the cost of the printing and the need to do something with all the old prints once they’ve been through a rotation. I guess they could be rotated back in, but still…
I do like the look of digital frames but they’re really stupidly expensive. Actually, now I think about it, my old TFT monitor and PC aren’t doing anything these days now the new mac is here….I wonder if I could rig up some sort of photo-serving terminal which lives in a corner of the room and exists only to run a very long, slow slideshow. Can TFT monitors be mounted? The PC is a bit noisy, though. Hmmm…… *thinking*
