Good question

On the M40, coming towards London, and somewhere near High Wycombe, the road snakes around the side of a hill. In an adjacent field, next to a copse of trees, is a 1m tall fence, painted along almost entire 30m length with the words: “Why do I still do this every day?”

I don’t drive along the M40 every day, and I subsequently don’t see the message every morning. I probably see it once every couple of months, on my way back into town from a visit to relatives or industrial archeological trip in the country to the NW of London.

But I see it often enough for it to strike a chord. Why do I still do this every day? I’m not entirely sure anymore.

Funny how words painted in 1m-high gloss paint beside a motorway can rattle about in your brain for hours, days afterwards. Perhaps one day they’ll inspire me to act.

Of course, the same could be said for the sign further down the road, where the M40 becomes the A40, near Perivale. Hoover.

I should do that too. Nothing like a roadside reminder to spur me into action.
