Inspired by this MeFi thread about a stereo photography technique called the “time space jiggle” (sounds like something from Barbarella) - good examples of the technique here - which basically involves putting the left and right images in an animated gif to make the stereo effect appear in time as well as space.
Anyway, I thought I’d have a bash.

It’s not perfect, but it’s better than the seasickness-inducing earlier attempts. I’ll try and refine the technique a bit this weekend.
Basic instructions are as follows: With the camera resting on a tripod, bookcase or other solid object, take a photo of something no closer than 3 feet away. Ideally, you should have something in the foreground, and not a whole lot else in the background, to make it simple.
Then move the camera about 6 cm to one side (I found it useful to take a series of photos at intervals of 2cm or so) while keeping the object in the same position within the frame.
If you try and keep the background the same (but from a different angle) you get a quite different effect - see below:

In this example, I tried to keep the cropping of the windowframe exact in both shots - and as a result, the window (and windowbox) seems to be the most static thing there.
Anyway, once you’ve got your two images, which are ever so slightly differently angled, pop them into a gif animation program with a frame rate of between 10 and 14 fps.
Et voila.
